Scientists Clear Wind Tunnel Throats

The bag of transonic tunnel testing tricks has not yet been completely emptied. Two variations on the basic theme of the ventilated throat, invented and pioneered by scientists at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, have improved current operations with a pair of transonic wind tunnels: At Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory, a perforated throat reduces the interference of shock waves reflected from the tunnel walls, permits the use of larger test models to give more accurate test results.
