Chicago—An interchangeable and ejectable nose section capsule bearing the pilot and all sensing, interpreting and communicating organs of a new integrated flight control system has passed a feasibility study by the Office of Naval Research and Douglas Aircraft Co. and is moving into the development phase.

An old idea, made practicable by new techniques, will double the number of ground-air communications channels now available in the congested high frequency (2 to 30 mc.) band. Called “Single Sideband,” or SSB for short, it also will improve intelligibility under adverse conditions and provide a several-fold increase in effective power and range.

Marquardt's experience with ramjet powerplants is among the most extensive in the industry. Early subsonic engines developed by the company powered missiles, drones and piloted aircraft in a variety of installations. One of these engines was a 30-in. diameter unit, test-flown under a Douglas B-26 used as a fiying test-stand.

Services Standardize Search and Rescue

Washington—The first official manual governing aircraft emergency procedures over water for both civil and military aircraft will be distributed this week by the U. S. Coast Guard. Compiled with the assistance of the Navy and the Civil Aeronautics Administration and bearing the additional endorsement of the USAT, the 115-page manual outlines and standardizes overwater search-and-rescue procedures for the Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and U. S. civil airliners on overseas flights.
