Bell Advances Avionics on Wide Front

This would be true even if the transistor were an end in itself, instead of the first of a whole new family of solidstate devices that promise to reshape radically the art of electronics. The transistor is but one of many significant developments to come out of BTL’s search for fundamental understanding in the field of communications and related arts.

Cornell Research Has Great Freedom

The laboratory is similarly free from commitments either to a production line or to prescribed military doctrines. CAL thus is as nearly independent as it appears practical for an applied research institution in aviation. About the only compromising factor is survival.

Facilities Lag Hurts British Missiles

It is now admitted, even by top officials in the Ministry of Supply, that Britain’s decision not to build an X-series of high-speed research aircraft was a mistake which was in large part responsible for the failure of the fighter program.

United Has Proved Value of Research

Frederick W. Rentschler, P&W’s founder, resigned the presidency of the Wright Aeronautical Corp. in 1924 to form a company around that philosophy. Within a year he had secured the financial backing and personnel to form P&W. The initial engine produced by this small group was a signal success, and P&W has since risen to a position of prominence in the aircraft engine field.

Martin’s Research Is Broad, Varied

Research and development at Martin breaks down traditionally into fundamental—done by its special subsidiary, Research Institute for Advanced Study, Inc.—and applied, which is done by almost every department in the parent company’s Engineering Division.

Convair Seeks Lead Through Research

Basic research that provides the raw knowledge necessary to any further technical advance. Many people have pointed out that the store of raw knowledge built up over centuries is almost exhausted and must be replenished. Convair spokesmen say they are aware that only a small part of the knowledge gained by basic research may be held as proprietary secrets.

Research Plays Large Role at Mit

Prior to World War II, sponsored research was an insignificant factor. Wartime impetus of military demands for better scientific tools has carried through the postwar decade. This year the Department of Defense is spending $43 million on research projects including Lincoln Laboratory at MIT.

Japan Gradually Reentering Air Age

But progress in aeronautical research and development must be made in defiance of many obstacles: • A lack of top-rate technicians due to the long post-war absence of an aircraft industry and a general psychological aversion to all things associated with airpower.
