Edward Hebert (D.-La.) charged that Defense Department had “coerced” Air Force into helping “bail out” the Studebaker-Packard Corp. by switching contract overhaul of J47 engines from General Electric Co. to Studebaker-Packard.

British Claim Supersonic P.1B Exceeds 1,132 mph. Speed Record

Wharton, England—English Electric demonstrated its supersonic P.l fighter last week, announcing at the same time that the first P.1B had exceeded the existing world speed record. The company declined to state the exact speed but it is believed to be in excess of 1,200 mph.

'Farside’ Aims at 4,000-mi. Altitude

Washington—Before the year’s end, a large rocket will be launched from a balloon high over Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific in an attempt to attain a peak altitude of 4,000 mi., a distance roughly equivalent to the earth’s radius. The launching will be the first firing in Project Farside (AW Dec. 3, p. 27), a research program sponsored by Air Research and Development Command aimed at uncovering secrets of natural phenomena in the far reaches of space surrounding the earth.

Afterburner Pushes F8U-1P to Trans-U. S. Speed Mark

New York—Navy successfully proved the feasibility of using afterburner power during the major portion of a tactical mission last week by flying a Chance Vought F8U-1P Crusader nonstop from California to New York at an average speed of Mach 1.1.
