Neutral Iran Will Add F-4ds to Strengthen Air Defense

Tehran-Iran is taking a bold step in advanced technology as it prepares to strengthen its small Imperial Iranian Air Force with the McDonnell F-4D while still absorbing its first supersonic jet fighter, the Northrop F-5. Although adopting an increasingly more independent role between East and the West, Iran has a military machine composed primarily of U.S. equipment, operated by men trained mainly by U.S. experts.

Tel Aviv-Airborne mobility tactics used by Israel in the six-day war with the Arabs reflected a definite move toward the use of helicopters to carry paratroops behind enemy lines. Only one parachute landing of troops was planned. That mission was scrubbed when it was discovered Egyptian troops had evacuated Sharm-el-Sheikh, permitting the transports to land at the airfield to discharge troops (AW&ST July 17, p. 89).
