Advanced European Launch Vehicles Urged

Paris-Europe must undertake the development of a family of advanced launch vehicles if it is to build a truly independent space program, according to the 10-year space plan formulated recently by the European Space Conference (ESC). This independent launcher capability will be a crucial factor in Europe’s future communications satellite program, the ESC maintains, because dependence on the United States or Russia for launchers would invite difficulties due to restrictions which might be placed on their use.

Phased-array Radar Set for Flight Test

Washington-First flight tests of two multi-function phased-array radars built by Emerson Electric and Raytheon, both candidates for possible use on USAF’s proposed new FX fighter, are expected to begin during the coming year. If the tests are successful, dramatic changes may be expected in airborne radar and fire control systems, much as phased-array techniques have opened new potentialities for ground-based systems, such as the Sentinel anti-ICBM system.
