Advanced F-111 System Nears Production

Los Angeles—First flight of the General Dynamics F-111D with the advanced avionics system—intended to enable the Air Force F-111 to fulfill its earlier promise—is scheduled this fall. Elements of the system, once called Mk. 2 avionics (AW&ST June 6, 1966, p. 93), already have undergone successful trials, and a more modest version of the system is being tested aboard the FB-111A bomber version of the F-111.

Worth—Bell Model 211 Huey Tug helicopter has been developed with company funds to demonstrate to the U.S. Army these possibilities for modifying and modernizing early-model UH-ls now in the inventory: Provision of a major increase in combat cargo lift capability quickly at relatively low cost, giving commanders improved flexibility for supporting troops in the field.

Air Force Readies First Buic-3 Facility

Bedford, Mass.—First of a planned series of 15 improved Back-Up Interceptor Control (BUIC-3) facilities is being readied by USAF’s Electronic Systems Div. here for turnover to the Aerospace Defense Command this fall. The first of the expanded BUIC-3 centers is located at North Truro, Mass., near the tip of Cape Cod (AW&ST Sept. 6, 1965, p. 83).
