Airline Data Systems Seen Cutting Costs

New generation of airline data processing systems now being phased into operation promises increased benefits in efficiency and resultant costs. Continental Airlines in Los Angeles, for example, finds that use of its new International Business Machines System/360 computer complex has led to a 15% drop in reservation service cost and 12% decrease in passenger departure processing expenditures, according to Mauro Weissman, computer system program director for the airline.

Edinburgh, Scotland—Navigation and attack systems for the Royal Air Force’s latest strike aircraft are approaching full production at the Ferranti, Ltd., plant here after a series of tough development problems were overcome. The new systems, which in many respects are similar and share numerous common elements, are being installed in the Hawker Siddeley Harrier VTOL strike aircraft and the McDonnell Douglas F-4M.
