Washington—Lingering questions about the validity of data returned by the Viking 1 and 2 biology instruments from the surface of Mars make it imperative to include some life-detection capability on a proposed 1984-launched, twin-lander mission to the planet, according to Harold P. Kline, science team leader for the Viking biology investigations and Ames Research Center director of life sciences.
