Cuts in Space-Based Interceptors Reduce Strategic Defense Costs

WASHINGTON Significant reductions in the proposed Space-Based Interceptor constellation for the Strategic Defense Initiative, coupled with acceptance of a smaller and less capable optical system for a space surveillance and tracking system, have resulted in “startling changes” in Phase 1 costs for a ballistic missile defense, Congress was told last week.

$282-Billion Defense Bill Increases Army, Navy Aircraft Procurement

WASHINGT ON President Reagan has signed a $282.4billion Fiscal 1989 Defense Appropriations bill that increases procurement, research and development funding for Army and Navy aircraft programs but cuts them for the Air Force. In general, the funding shifts reflect the recommendation of House and Senate conferees on the bill that funding for conventional weapon systems be increased.
