Threatened Job Losses Fuel Congressional Opposition to FAA’s Foreign Repair Rules

WASHINGTON A U.S. labor and trade coalition wants Congress to overturn the Federal Aviation Administration’s decision last year to permit foreign repair centers to service U.S. transport aircraft. The debate surfaced in the House last week and is another indication of how seriously Congress will react to any action abroad that it perceives as threatening an industry in which the U.S. has traditionally dominated.

Latest B-2 Cost Data Spur Mounting Hill Opposition

WASHINGTON The Air Force plans a B-2 bomber funding peak and a procurement buildup beyond 20 aircraft per year in Fiscal 1993, a newly declassified budget breakdown shows. The data, which provide year-by-year development and production budget proposals for the first time, revealed that the Defense Acquisition Board deepened the B-2 procurement budget cut that was sent to Congress in April as part of President Bush’s defense budget revisions.

USAF Continues to Increase Daytime Flights of F-117A Stealth Aircraft

LOS ANGELES The Air Force is further expanding daylight flights of the Lockheed F-117A stealth attack aircraft over levels of a few months ago, resulting in sightings at more locations in the southwestern U.S. The F-117A has been seen over the ocean near Monterey, Calif., over Reno, Nev., and over Lancaster and Palmdale, Calif., farther south than earlier sightings in the Mojave desert (AW&ST May 1, p. 24).

SLAM Missile Test Conducted Successfully At Pacific Range

The U.S. Navy conducted a successful first test flight of the McDonnell Douglas AGM-84 Stand-off Land Attack Missile June 24 at the Pacific Missile Test Center range off the coast of California. The missile was launched from an A-6E aircraft and guided to its target by an F/A-18 using the Walleye data link.
