NEW YORK American and Northwest airlines last week introduced fare cuts that were quickly matched by some other carriers, reflecting the industry’s concern about excess capacity and weak traffic. In American’s promotion, passengers who buy first-class, business-class or full-fare coach tickets to Europe or Japan will receive a free ticket good for travel anywhere American flies, later this year.

Virgin Atlantic Raising Cash To Expand Fleet and Routes

NEW YORK Virgin Atlantic Airways plans to expand its fleet and add routes by drawing on a new cash reserve that will enable the carrier to increase the competition facing British Airways in key markets. “We want to build the airline and make sure we offer a real alternative to British Airways,” Virgin Atlantic Chairman Richard Branson said.
