F-2 Wing Cracks Lead Ministry to Study Deployment Delay

TOKYO Japanese Defense Minister Hosei Norota said he might delay deploying the Mitsubishi F-2 close air support fighter to front-line units because of cracks in its composite wings. He also said Japan should consider postponing introduction of refueling tanker aircraft, apparently out of concern that they might be taken as an aggressive sign by China and Southeast Asian nations.

Paris Paris The U.K. government has agreed to provide funding for the Beagle 2 lander, virtually ensuring that vehicle development will go ahead as planned. The lander is to be launched with Europe’s Mars Express probe, to be placed in orbit around Mars in 2003.

Border Tensions Rise Again After Shootdown

NEW DELHI SAN FRANCISCO A Pakistani navy Breguet Atlantic reconnaissance/antisubmarine warfare aircraft was shot down last week by an Indian air force MiG-21 near the Arabian Sea, killing all 16 on board. Whether the Pakistan aircraft entered Indian airspace is in dispute, but the incident clearly raised tensions between the two countries just weeks after they had cooled a two-month border war over Kashmir far to the north.

Spacehab Stake May Presage Major DASA Foray Into U.S.

Paris DaimlerChrysler Aerospace will become the biggest shareholder in Spacehab in what is expected to be the first of a series of steps to increase the German company’s presence in non-European markets, particularly the U.S. The agreement by DASA last week to purchase a $12-million equity stake in Spacehab—one of the biggest U.S. players in the commercial space business— will give the German-based manufacturer an 11% shareholding, making it the largest single shareholder in the company.

Satellite Self-Protection Equipment Attracts USAF Interest, Investment

Washington The U.S. Air Force wants to develop electronic warfare equipment that could protect satellites because of a growing fear among commanders that assets in space will come under attack in future conflicts. The vulnerability of U.S. satellites is increasingly of concern to Defense Dept. officials, particularly as they see the proliferation of technology that can be used for antisatellite warfare.
