NEW YORK Rockwell International plans to exit the aerospace industry by spinning off its Collins electronics unit to compete independently against the combined General Electric and Honeywell International. But this David-and-Goliath matchup may not be as one-sided as it might appear.

GE Testing F1 10-132

NEW YORK General Electric is running performance tests of its 32,000lb.-thrust F110-GE-132 engine for Block 60 F-16s at its Peebles, Ohio, facility in anticipation of beginning altitude trials next year. The engine—the first complete, purpose-built F110-132— began about 30 hr. of runs at Peebles on an outdoor test stand in late November.

Endeavour Lands; Atlantis Readied

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER The U.S./Canadian crew of Endeavour completed its 12day International Space Station assembly mission with a flyaround of the ISS followed two days later by a night reentry and landing on Runway 13 here on Dec. 11. Endeavour’s deployment of 65-kw. solar arrays on the ISS clears the way for launch of the 32,000-lb.

Reflections

This is the 11th annual Aviation Week & Space Technology photo issue, and the inaugural edition for our Aerospace Art Awards. While our photo issue has matured each year with an increasingly wider range of aviation and space-related photographs, we realized that we were missing the portrayal of aviation scenes that would be nearly impossible to capture by camera because of their historic elements or the inability of having a photographer at the scene.
