How can I—as a U.S. taxpayer—be inspired to throw my money at a Moon base that I can’t even see? Place it on the Earth side so we all can look up and say “Wow” instead of “Where?” No doubt there are scientific benefits to a base on the dark side of the Moon (AW&ST Oct. 12-25, p. 65).

Airbus Group’s Defense and Space Division has appointed Dirk Hoke (see photo) chief executive officer, succeeding Bernhard Gerwert, who will retire as Airbus CEO after 36 years in the aerospace industry. Hoke will be deputy CEO to Gerwert for several months then take the reins in mid-2016.

China’s first C919 airliner is ready for ground testing after being rolled out in Shanghai on Nov. 2, says manufacturer Comac. First flight is planned for 2016, but no date is given for entry into service of the 158-seat narrowbody. Deliveries were originally planned for 2016, but 2019-20 now appears likely (page 43).
