Rocket motors, fired in sequence, propel the seat and pilot up and forward in order to clear the vertical stabilizer. Pilot remains with the seat in a free fall through rarified upper air until he reaches 15,000 ft. altitude. Barometer-controlled device then automatically releases pilot’s seat harness and he is pulled free by a drogue parachute. Immediately afterward his own parachute opens automatically. The supersonic ejection seat project is under the cognizance of Wright Aeronautical Development Division of ARDC.

First CL-44 Nears Completion Airframe of the first Canadair CL-44 turboprop transport is being assembled on the production line in Montreal, Canada. The 150-passenger aircraft is designed to carry a 65,000 lb. payload at almost 400 mph. Royal Canadian Air Force has ordered 12 CL-44s. Seaboard & Western Airlines and Flying Tiger Line have purchased 15 swing-tail CL-44D-4 turboprop cargo aircraft (AW Mav 18, p. 41).

ADMITTEDLY LAGGING in airframe design, Britain is making a strong bid for a larger share of the engine market. Pictured above is a Convair 340 converted to Napier Eland turboprops. It made its first flight last week. Napier, hoping to convince airlines of the soundness of its program, says the shift saves 2,200 lb. in weight, boosts takeoff power and load capacity and lowers the noise level.
