McDonnell Douglas Corp. has begun low-speed wind tunnel tests of its F-l5 short takeoff and landing (STOL) maneuvering demonstrator aircraft, using a 7% model in the company's own wind tunnel. Tests of the model, which is shown being adjusted by a McDonnell Douglas technician, will determine how the airflow from the thrust reversing engine nozzles installed on the experimental F-l5 fighter will affect the aerodynamics of the aircraft at low speeds. Highspeed wind tunnel testing will begin later this year. The F-l5 STOL demonstrator aircraft is scheduled to make its first flight in 1988.

Flame holder or colander was designed by Rolls-Royce for the Pegasus engine used with a proposed supersonic V/STOL aircraft, based on the design of the Marine Corps/McDonnell Douglas AV-8B. The company has resumed tests with plenum chamber burning using the colander in the front nozzles of a Pegasus engine to augment and increase engine thrust by 50%. The colander fits in each side of the plenum chamber, which feeds the bypass air from the fan to the front nozzles.

Ames Will Test Model of Supersonic V/STOL Fighter Scale model of a supersonic V/STOL fighter designed by McDonnell Douglas will be tested at National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Ames Research Center this spring. The design, Model 279-3, will have canard wings and a plenum chamber burning engine. The aircraft would have a Mach 2 top speed and carry two long-range and two medium-range missiles and air-to-ground ordnance weighing 18,000 lb.
