Improper Loading Cited in D18s Crash

A South Central Airlines, Inc., Beech D18S, N2999, crashed during takeoff from runway 6 at the Gainesville Municipal Airport, Gainesville, Fla., at 0800 EST. Feb. 3, 1964. The aircraft was observed during takeoff with flaps down as it made a steep climb to approximately 200 ft. from which it stalled and struck the departure end of runway 6.

Lunar Surface Structure Probes Studied

Los Angeles—Three methods of determining structural characteristics of the moon’s surface are under study for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Equipment based on any of these studies would be designed for ejection from a manned Apollo spacecraft and would serve to certify locations for landing of a Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) on a subsequent Apollo flight.

Aec Funding Reduced on Space, Defense

Washington—Atomic Energy Commission’s budget for Fiscal 1966 will finance weapons, military and space programs at a level of $1.1 billion, a decline of $62 million from the current fiscal year. Sharpest drop will be in military activities, where “significant reductions can be made in this area, without in any way jeopardizing our national security,” Dr. Glenn T. Seaborg, AEC chairman, recently told the Joint Congressional Committee on Atomic Energy.

Columbus, Ohio—North American Aviation, Inc., is accelerating fabrication of its first OV-10A counter-insurgency (COIN) flight model in an attempt to get the prototype flying three to four months ahead of schedule. Based on the contract go-ahead, received last Oct. 15, the first flight was set for September of this year.

Comsat Bid on Defense System Faces Fight

Washington—Communications Satellite Corp. faces a hard fight in its efforts to get the Defense Dept, to cancel the existing USAF program with Philco to develop its own military space communication system, and instead rent service from a system which Comsat proposes to launch for exclusive military use (AW&ST Feb. 1, p. 32).
