Paris—Sud Aviation and Generale Aeronautique Marcel Dassault are pressing ahead with their 241-passenger twin-turbofan Galion airbus concept (AW&ST Feb. 28, p. 27) as a follow-on to the Sud Caravelle transport in the medium-haul market in Europe and other parts of the world outside the U.S.

German Firms Push Plans for Commercial Jet Transports

Hanover, West Germany—Definite movement of the German aviation industry toward commercial jet transports for the first time since it was reborn 10 years ago was apparent at the sixth Hanover Air Show here. Government developmental funding has been assured for the Vereinigte Flugtechnische Werke VFW 614 twinturbofan short-haul transport, and it appeared fairly certain that if the governments of Britain and France agree to go ahead on the European jet airbus project, Germany would become the third partner.

Los Angeles—Industry proposals for a study of guidance and navigation systems for launch vehicles having cruise capability are being evaluated by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Ames Research Center. The proposals were submitted late last month.

New York—North Atlantic airlines are confident that they will carry well in excess of 4.5 million passengers this year as they approach what promises to be their best season on these prime routes. Last year for the first time, the North Atlantic carriers flew more than 4 million passengers in scheduled and charter operations.

Usaf Evaluates Loran-inertial System

Woodland Hills, Calif.—Air Force is planning to flight test a combined Loran and inertial navigation system early this summer which may significantly aid the performance of tactical military aircraft. Combining the two navigation concepts could overcome the shortcomings of both and result in performance superior to that of either system operating alone, in the judgment of Litton Industries’ Guidance and Control Systems Div.
