British Industry Growing Steadily

London—British avionics companies are reporting steady growth in both new technology and current production output, despite a relative dearth of major new airframe projects. Heaviest output is in military programs, despite the existence of both new and retrofit commercially oriented efforts, such as the advanced multi-microprocessor-based slats and flaps control system for the Airbus Industrie A310 transport, developed by Marconi Avionics under subcontract to Liebherr in West Germany, and the autothrottle speed control systems produced by Smiths Industries and selected by Boeing Commercial Airplane Co. as a customer option on 727 and 737 transport aircraft.
