Amsterdam—A four-nation consortium has agreed in principle to build a largescale transonic wind tunnel near Cologne, West Germany, but only after international disagreements delayed the program by about four years. The tunnel, which is intended to be used to develop the next generation of transport aircraft, will not be available to industry until 1995.

Washington—Opportunity to spread the risk and escalating costs of developing new commuter and corporate aircraft is spurring additional joint ventures between manufacturers on different continents. The recent trend among aircraft manufacturers to link with other companies to spread the risk—as well as the potential gains—involved with the development of a new aircraft for the commuter market has been well-established by such programs as the Saab-Scania/Fairchild Industries 340, the Aeritalia/Aerospatiale ATR42 and the CN-235 being built by Spain’s Construcciones Aeronáuticas and P.
