WASHINGTON A specially commissioned panel last week advised NASA against leasing a commercial free-flying space module. The report raised questions about the nearterm viability of space industrialization. The initiative to lease a commercially developed space facility (CDSF) was a cornerstone of the Reagan Administration’s space policy announced in February, 1988.

WASHINGTON The Alpha hydrogen-fluoride laser, a candidate technology for future spacebased missile defense weaponry, was fired Apr. 7 for the first time. The test lasted only one-fifth of a second, but Strategic Defense Initiative officials said it was an important achievement, nonetheless.

Northrop, Five Employees Indicted in Fraud Case

Los ANGELES The Air Force and Navy will consider suspending or debarring Northrop from receiving government contracts following a federal indictment filed here on Apr. 11. The 167-count indictment charges that the corporation defrauded the government by supplying equipment that would not meet specifications, that was not tested as required and that Northrop made false statements to the government about these problems.
