BUDGET PRESSURES THREATEN ATARS, MEDIUM-RANGE UAV

WASHINGTON A number of alternative payloads are being quietly evaluated for the U. S. military's medium-range unmanned aerial vehicle whose primary payload—the next-generation tactical reconnaissance system—is coming under intense Pentagon scrutiny because it is $1.7 billion underfunded.

USAF MAY PAY HERCULES FOR SRMU LOSSES

LOS ANGELES The Air Force is working with Congress to provide $300-350 million to Hercules Aerospace to cover losses suffered from its solid rocket motor upgrade (SRMU) program for the Martin Marietta Titan 4 launcher. The "SRMU stabilization program" is attempting to compensate for the turbulent Titan 4 history, where the expected number of launches has dropped from about 100 to roughly 40, and where the $250-million SRMU development was paid for by Hercules, not the government.

TAIWAN TO ACQUIRE PATRIOT DERIVATIVE

BOSTON Raytheon and Taiwan are working on an agreement to coproduce $1.1 billion worth of missile hardware and software in a deal that has gone largely unnoticed even though Congress was notified of it six months ago. The Raytheon-Taiwan deal involves coproduction of a Patriot derivative.
