Dozens of patents exist for making flying machines which incorporate the parachute principle. To many minds, it seems that a descending parachute so nearly floats that it would not take much to make it do so. The fallacy is probably merely an optical and psychological illusion.

The Aviation Day held on the Curtiss Field at Mineola on Sunday, Oct. 16, by the Aero Club of America through the cooperation of the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corp., which loaned the field for the event, was a great and well deserved success.

The Deutsch de la Meurthe Trophy Race

The first international race for the Henry Deutsch de la Meurthe Cup took place on Oct. 1, at Etampes, France, and was won by the French entrant Georges Kirsch on a Nieuport-Delage “sesquiplane” fitted with the 300 hp. Hispano-Suiza engine.
