There are two ways of writing about a country of which one has not the honour of being a citizen. One is to go there for five minutes and then write all about it, on the principle of the fool who rushes in where angels fear to tread. The other is to live there for years and years and years and then write a long book to explain why one knows nothing about the country or its people and their manners (if any) or customs.
