Flying Adventures in Alaska

Although Alaska has an area of ten times that of New York State, it is such a rugged region that there was a great outcry when, in 1867, the United States purchased the territory from Russia for $7,200,000.00. The discovery of great mineral deposits stimulated the growth of the country tremendously but, even today, there are little more than 50,000 inhabitants of which almost half are Eskimos or Indians.

Commercial Speeds of 300 M.p.h.

ONE OF the most fascinating fields for aeronautical prediction is the possible development of high flying planes for commercial use. For long distance flights, greater speed, clearer weather, and favoring winds could be obtained, but the problems to be met are many.

37,579 Ft. Macready's Latest Altitude

Lieut. John A. Macready, Army Air Service, made an altitude flight to 37,579 ft. at McCook Field on March 13, according to calibrations of his instruments by the United States Bureau of Standards. His achievement, however, does not equal the world’s record, although it exceeds Lieutenant Macready’s own record, made in 1921, and that made by Sadi Lecointe in France in 1923.
