Why More Than Two Engines?

VIRTUALLY ALL transport airplanes in use today, either on commercial airlines or in military service, are two-engine or fourengine craft. Single-engine machines are at present excluded by CAA regulations from night operation with passengers, and no single-engine airplane may in the future be licensed in the transport category.
