Big Af Depot Key to Korean Air Strength

Tachikawa Air Base, Japan—The reservoir that feeds Far East Air Force’s fighters and bombers in their daily sorties against MiGs and Communist ground forces is this sprawling base, the Far East Air Materiel Command. From its warehouses come every round of ammunition, rocket, bomb or other weapon thrown against the foe.

New Technical Chief for Caa Safety Office

More than four weeks after he had taken over his new job, the appointment of David L. Posner, as chief of the technical staff of the CAA Office of Aviation Safety was announced. Posner, generally regarded by industry as a well-qualified powerplants engineer, assumed his new duties May 11, but his appointment was not announced until a release dated June 9, although it had been forecast in AVIATION WEEK (Apr. 14, p. 9).

Italy Coming to Nato’s Aid

Rome—The aeronautical vacuum that existed in Italy after World War II is rapidly filling up. This is despite scanty appropriations by the government to rebuild the Italian Air Force, as permitted by the peace treaty. Foreign Interest—A good part of the impetus is being supplied by foreign aviation firms, some of them American, who have become aware of the engineering, labor and production resources that have been wasting away in Italy for lack of orders.

Jacobs Aircraft Engine Co., a subsidiary of Barium Steel Corp., is stepping up its activities with its entry into the helicopter field. Jacobs is pushing a Gyrodyne-type craft—Model 104—a fiveplace copter aimed at achieving a top speed of 185-190 mph., cruise at more than 155 mph.

Dayton, O.—“Mr. Procurement” of the Air Force has retired after 34 years of service. He is William E. Donnelly, 62, of Dayton, long a civilian executive assistant to military procurement directors at Air Materiel Command here. Donnelly was dubbed “Mr. Procurement” by Stuart Symington when the latter was assistant Secretary for Air Force.
