History of Ual’s Coach Policy

CAL estimates the amount of the awards by multiplying by 10% the calculated savings in dollars the idea will achieve. Nov. 4, 1948: Capital Airlines starts first scheduled domestic aircoach. Previously only coach service available offered by large irregular carriers. 1949: All major trunklines except United start coach service. May 4, 1950: "Competitive considerations caused United to inaugurate aircoach service on the Pacific Coast early in 1950," United president Patterson says in his 1950 annual report dated Mar. 8, 1951, adding: "Such service was begun … with 66-passenger DC-4 planes."
