Edwards, Calif.—Near the center of the Mojave Desert, less than 100 mi. northeast of Los Angeles, lies a huge, level expanse of hard-baked clay and silt known as Rogers Dry Lake. Its glistening surface, 13 mi. long and 5 mi. wide, throws off a blinding glare under the hot sun and occasional sand-storms swirl across the dry bed.
