Washington—Infrared horizon sensors, used to provide earth-attitude reference and stabilization both for manned and unmanned satellites, have encountered trouble from an unexpected phenomenon—clouds at extremely high altitudes which appear cold rather than warm.

Washington—Pentagon strategists consider the present arms buildup in Cuba the first step toward eventual construction of intermediate-range ballistic missile emplacements. They point out that the defensive nature of armaments arriving from Soviet Russia is aimed at preventing aerial photographic reconnaissance, not at preparation to fend off an invasion, although they could be used to repel invasion.

Loran-c Extension Proposed for Tracking

New York—Sperry Gyroscope Co. engineers are proposing an extension of the Loran-C navigational system to enable more accurate prediction of impact points for ballistic missiles and manned spacecraft. The long-range navigational aid would be used to determine positions of ships and aircraft in the recovery area with greater accuracy than that now available from standard dead-reckoning or inertial navigation techniques.

Eastern Implements Sales Group Change

New York—Elimination of geographical organization in favor of a single system arrangement, with direct authority between home office and field officials, has been adopted by Eastern Air Lines in revamping its sales group. “This has meant a complete shakeup within our sales organization,” said Malcolm A. MacIntyre, president of Eastern, in announcing the move.
