View of Stars Clarified By Space Vehicles

Washington—Adaptation of space vehicles for astronomical research is considered as great an advance in this science as the invention of the telescope, because satellites make available a vast amount of information on the nature of the universe that never penetrates the atmospheric cloud of gas surrounding the earth.

Early Profits Indicate Further Delta Gain

Atlanta—Delta Air Lines is continuing its philosophy that bigness isn’t synonymous with success, and has launched current fiscal year operations toward profits even greater than the $6,985,000 it netted in 1961-62. With only 25 jets, a small fleet compared with those of Delta’s prime competitors, the carrier in July and August made $4,452,000 after taxes, an impressive 3,150% more than during the same period a year ago (AW Oct. 16, 1961, p. 36).

Funds, Manpower Shift West, Northeast

Washington—Shift in federal spending for defense and non-military space activities among geographical areas and changes in the types of goods and services purchased has spotlighted the concentration of technical manpower on the West Coast and northeastern U. S. Two recent surveys, one by the Defense Dept, and the other by the Commerce Dept., show that the changing nature of procurement from high volume hardware production to increased emphasis on research and development and low-volume custom production has caused a shift in contract awards and the use of scientists and engineers.
