Ethiopian Carrier Faces Jet Competition

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia—Ethiopian Air Lines’ future may be linked indefinitely to Western management as it begins jet service in the face of anticipated new competition from European and African airlines (AW Jan. 14, p. 40). Behind the airline’s successful 17year history under Trans World Airlines management stands the unwavering support and realistic attitude of Emperor Haile Selassie 1, who has seen EAL emerge from a brush operation to one of Africa’s most respected and profitable airlines.

It is interesting to note that the (landable) lenticular re-entry vehicle designed by Fairchild Stratos (AW Dec. 3, p. 77) for possible extra-terrestrial landings bears a striking resemblance to the “flying saucers” which have been reported from all points of the earth for the past 15 years or more.

Xv-5a Flight Reproduced By Simulator

San Diego—Realistic visual-display flight simulator developed by Ryan Aeronautical Co. here for optimization of aircraft system designs, as well as pilot familiarization, is expected to play an important role in the development of the General Electric-Ryan XV-5A V/STOL lift-fan aircraft (see p. 64) prior to its first scheduled flight next August at Lindbergh Field.
