Dornier Is Developing Paraglider Rocket

Immenstaad, Germany—Germany’s Federal Ministry of Scientific Research has placed a development order with Domier-Werke GmbH’s Systems Div. for its paraglider-recovered sounding rocket. The company is in the final stages of research on the 1½-year-old Project 621—as it is officially designated (AW Sept. 9, p. 67)—despite being handicapped by the government’s practice of releasing funds near the end of the year for which they were appropriated.

Oso 2 Instruments Will Scan Solar Disk

Boulder, Colo.—The second in a series of orbiting solar observatories, scheduled to be launched later this winter by a Thor Delta booster from Cape Canaveral, will carry a complex group of scientific experiments capable of being scanned across the solar disk as part of a continuing examination from outside the earth’s atmosphere of solar phenomena.

I know that when I was back in Europe we all looked to Cape Canaveral as the rocket center of the free world much the same as one looks to Hollywood as the heart of the movie industry.
