Washington—First two development models of the Federal Aviation Agency’s new economy ILS (instrument landing system) aids, designed for use at smaller airports where standard equipment cost cannot be justified, have recently been installed at the Jamestown, N. Y., and Bradford, Pa., municipal airports and soon will be ready for operational evaluation.

Zuckert Gives Views on Aerospace Issues

(Eugene M. Zuckert has been secretary of the Air Force longer than any other man since the office was created. He was sworn in as secretary Jan. 24, 1961, thus passing the three-year mark this past January. Zuckert also served as assistant secretary to then Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington from Sept. 26, 1947 to Jan. 21, 1952, when he was appointed to the Atomic Energy Commission.

Pulsed Lights Developed for Small Fields

New York—Variety of low-cost approach lighting systems, designed to give smaller airports capability of accepting traffic under marginal VFR flight conditions, currently are being marketed by two manufacturers. Don Hoskins Co., Chicago, is producing a system which gives pulsed approach path lighting by condenser discharge lights plus runway identification and which sells for less than $6,000 for the standard version or less than $8,500 for the portable version, plus installation.

National Space Policy

The space program is essential to our national security. Some of our light-minded citizens have asserted that space does not have defense values because the moon is not useful as a military base. The first thing wrong with such an assertion is that, as important as it is, the lunar project is not the whole space program.
