Pasadena, Calif—Ranger 7 passed through the critical mid-course maneuver phase of its lunar trajectory successfully last week and headed for impact on the moon. Restrained optimism was the tenor of comment at National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory here.

J.—First Tiros wheelconfiguration weather satellite, an experimental version scheduled for October launch, incorporates several avionics changes designed to improve camera programing and advance dynamic attitude and spin control capabilities, while increasing picture storage capacity The 300-lb wheel will be launched into a near-polar orbit from Cape Kennedy, using an improved X-258 third stage of the Thor-Delta launch vehicle to yaw the payload from a 32-deg.

Rocket Ejection Improvement Need Cited

Need for markedly improving rocketassisted crew ejection systems, both in performance and reliability of equipment, is indicated in a study of U. S. Air Force experience with current equipment. A survey of a period from October, 1958, through December, 1963, involving 107 rocket-assist crew ejections from USAF aircraft, indicated that 26 of these, or almost one-quarter, resulted in fatalities, with another 19 resulting in major injuries and 17 receiving some minor injuries.
