Washington—Advanced manned mission planning has gone so far within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration that Congress is being given detailed forecasts of how the space agency can make full use of its scientific and engineering research technology to expand Apollo hardware toward permanent space stations conducting continuous exploration of the earth, moon and the planets.

Prototype Telescope for Oao-c Tested

New York—Acceptance testing is under way on a prototype space telescope being built for the third orbiting astronomical observatory (OAO-C) by the Perkin-Elmer Corp., Norwalk, Conn. The space telescope, which is the main part of an optical unit called the Princeton University Experiment Package, is scheduled to be delivered to the Sylvania Electronic Systems Div., the prime experiment contractor, for system integration testing by the end of June.

Stationkeeping System Effective in Tests

Air Force may outfit its entire fleet of Lockheed C-130 turboprop transports with stationkeeping avionics equipment, based on encouraging results of recent flight tests of its AN/APN-169 intraformation positioning system. Recent tests conducted by Tactical Air Command at Eglin AFB indicate that the APN-169 stationkeeping system enables pilots of military transports to fly in formations in IFR weather conditions at separation intervals of 2,000 ft. or less.

Los Angeles—Selection of a contractor for the large payload test vehicle (LPTV) program is expected to be made by USAF Ballistic Systems Div. by the end of this month. The program will begin with a study phase aimed at developing a re-entry vehicle inland-range booster as a follow-on to the current Atlantic Research Corp. Athena booster.

Voskhod 2 Expands Soviet Space Lead

Moscow—Lt. Col. Alexei Leonov’s extra-vehicular space excursion leaves only a space linkup between two vehicles as the last remaining demonstration before Russia attempts a launch of men to the moon or on an interplanetary mission. Leonov and Col. Pavel Belyayev were launched in Voskhod 2 at 10 a.m. (2 a.m. EST) Mar. 18 from Tyuratam.
