Burgeoning U. S. Use of Air Power Aimed at Forestalling Ground War with Chinese

Saigon—Burgeoning U.S. emphasis and dependence on air power is providing an instrument of national policy in North Vietnam and a tool for survival in South Vietnam. It is designed to avoid a predominately American-supported, large-scale ground war on the continent of Southeast Asia, which could include a direct confrontation with at least a portion of Communist China’s 2-million-man army.

Letters

Dr. Coanda We read with interest the letter regarding Dr. Henri Coanda written by Prof. P. J. Yangos in the Mar. 29, 1965 issue of AW&ST (p. 90). While we do not agree with many of the statements made on Dr. Coanda’s behalf by Prof. Yangos, some of which are inaccurate or misleading, nevertheless we wish to point out that Dr. Coanda is indeed a fabulous individual whose many engineering achievements should properly be brought to light for the readers of this magazine.

Air Reconnaissance Aided By Line-scanning Laser Camera

Use of a scanning laser beam as a quasi-secretive illuminator for night aerial reconnaissance is stimulating great interest among organizations struggling with the vexing problems of tactical reconnaissance. A laser camera line-scanning system would substitute for a normal camera equipped with telltale magnetic flares or powerful strobe lights with their cumbersome power supplies now required for illuminating targets during nighttime photographic reconnaissance operations.
