Collision Spurs New York Airport Dispute

New York—Collision of airliners in the crowded sky over the New York metropolitan area early this month has added fuel to the dispute over the need here for a fourth major airport. It is debatable whether the existence of a fourth transport airport would have averted the accident (AW&ST Dec. 13, p. 39).

Boron Research Focusing on Components

Los Angeles—Major element of the Air Force’s advanced development program for composite materials will be component development, according to George P. Peterson of the Air Force Materials Laboratory. Although the program will concentrate initially on the use of boron and glass filaments in organic matrices for components in the areas of aircraft engines and structures, space and reentry vehicles, rocket hardware and helicopter rotors, Peterson said, other reinforcement materials and matrices will be studied on the basis of “their applicability and importance to the highest payoff composite structural components.”
