Vietnam War Needs Spur Laser Research

Los Angeles—Whether lasers will emerge from the development laboratory into widespread military application in the held will be determined over the next 18-24 months in Vietnamese-war-stimulated operational tests. Should lasers provide answers to some of the vexing technological challenges posed by the Asian conflict and its emphasis on tactical warfare, the illusive multimillion dollar production market predicted by a few laser advocates early in this decade may well be in the offing.

Cost Problems Force Changes in Europe’s Space Plans

Paris—Difficulties in estimating or meeting program costs are revising European plans for space exploration over the next five years. In nearly every national and international program in Europe, difficulty in forecasting costs—in part due to inflation—has played havoc with initial estimates.
