Burbank, Calif.-Lockheed-California Co. has proposed to use a mixture of three titanium alloys in its L-2000-7 supersonic transport and, in a substantial departure from current methods, will employ automated welding to join roughly half of the airframe parts.

Hawthorne, Calif.—First fully integrated navigation system ever designed as basic equipment for a military jet transport is entering the critical later stages of development here at Northrop Corp.’s Nortronics Div. The new system will provide the Air Force’s projected Lockheed C-5A heavy logistics transport with five navigation modes, including an automatic precision navigating capability unusual for a military transport.

Scanner to Examine Chromosome Changes

Blood cell scanner based on the recognition of patterns made by scattered light from a laser will be used to look at changes in animal and human chromosomes subjected to prolonged stresses and radiation in space. Other potential uses of the scanner include the elimination of tedious and time-consuming blood analyses in hospitals, the study of birth defects and other general genetic characteristics on a larger scale than has been previously possible.
