Restructuring of U. S. Airspace Considered By Faa to Meet Rising Traffic, Fund Pinch

Washington—Stringent regulations to restrict or ban a portion of the nation’s aircraft from certain airspace are being considered seriously for the first time by Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control service. ATC is being called up to provide increased services to a vastly larger number of users.

Wide Use of Navy's New Test System Seen

Washington-Recent industry briefings on the Navy’s new Versatile Avionics Shop Test (VAST) system, whose introduction will have a major influence on all future naval avionics systems, attracted more than 1,200 representatives from over 200 avionic and airframe companies. The briefings were sponsored by the Naval Air Systems Command and Electronic Industries Assn. All new Navy avionic systems must be designed so that VAST can be used to test and trouble-shoot automatically a system, its major assemblies and the individual plug-in modules within each assembly (AW&ST Aug. 2, 1965, p. 87).

Military Tests May Preview Sst Problems

Beverly Hills, Calif.-Flight problems of military aircraft in supersonic high-altitude cruise may provide a preview of difficulties to be resolved in the design of commercial supersonic aircraft. Discussion of supersonic flight by a panel of pilots, including those flying the Lockheed SR-71, was the finale of a three-day meeting of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

Washington-Seven short-lived spacecraft launched by the Russians during the past year may have been used to test missile defense radars and to evaluate Soviet ICBM penetration aids, much as the U.S. has been doing on Kwajalein Atoll for several years.
