Turbine powerplants and aerospace technology appear destined to play major roles in the evolution of high-speed surface transportation. The Department of Transportation’s Office of High Speed Ground Transportation (OHSGT) is sponsoring two major demonstration programs, one major hardware program and several studies in the field of advanced surface transportation.

Digital Techniques Gain in British Avionics

Farnborough-Shift to more widespread use of digital, rather than analog, techniques throughout newer British avionics equipment was in increasing evidence here at the recent Farnborough Flying Display and Exhibition. Prompted in large measure by the emergence of small, powerful digital computers and advantages of greater accuracy and flexibility, this trend has already begun to have significant impact on the design of numerous American military avionics systems and, to a much smaller degree, on commercial transport systems.

Satellite Could Boost Doppler Accuracy

Washington-Use of range measurements to a single synchronous equatorial satellite to permit reduced lateral separations across the North Atlantic was proposed here at the recent Eascon conference by a Hughes Aircraft Co. engineer. The report by R. J. Adams was one of several which discussed possible satellite navigator/air surveillance concepts on the near or more-distant horizon.
