San Franclsco-Attempt by Howard Hughes to pick up 4he pieces of Air West has focused attention on the regional carriers and raised the question of what has gone wrong in two out of three local service mergers. Although the Civil Aeronautics Board has encouraged local service mergers as a matter of policy, the Board now—in proceedings aimed at a Hughes’ takeover of Air West—is hearing a disheartening before the honeymoon hardly began.
Washington-Heavy existing U.S. financial commitment and maintenance of technological leadership are among the major factors that will probably lead Transportation Secretary John A. Volpe to recommend that the supersonic transport program move ahead into the prototype construction phase.
