The Global Explosion

The global explosion of route expansion that began last year is now accelerating at a pace that is changing traditional concepts of operations, marketing and management. There are several factors that are contributing to the faster rate of global route expansion: ■ Opening of the Siberian land mass of the Soviet Union to international airlines that is drastically changing the air routes between Europe and Asia.

Airlines Prepare for Introduction of 747

New York-Major innovations in passenger and cargo servicing, ground support equipment and terminal design are being developed by airlines to prepare for the Boeing 747, the first of the new generation wide-body transports. The magnitude of the preparations is so great that one airline has formulated new management concepts to help solve problems of introducing such airplanes.

American Devises New Management Concept

New York—New management concept has been devised by American Airlines to help prepare for operations with new technology equipment such as the Boeing 747 and the wide-body trijets. Nucleus of the concept is an eight-man corporate project group, with each member coming from a different major division of American management.

Delivery Delays Cloud 747 Planning

Plans for introduction of Boeing 747 service in specific markets have not been definitely established by most airlines. This is due largely to the amount of time left before service begins. The situation has been aggravated substantially by the delivery delays (AW&ST Sept. 22, p. 35).

Magnitude of crew training programs for the Boeing 747 is affecting airlines in much the same manner as preparations for ground support and passenger service. Initial expense of the program is high, but requirement for new proce dures and equipment represents a definite advance in the state of the art.
