U.k. to Join European Space Effort, Balks at Launcher

Paris—Britain’s new Conservative government has signaled its intention to join Europe in a long-range space program for the 1971-80 period based primarily on applications satellites. But it has reiterated Britain’s unwillingness to contribute to development of an advanced launch vehicle unless the European space community is unable to negotiate a launch agreement with the U.S. The government’s position on the future European space program was outlined at the recent European Space Conference meeting in Brussels by H. G. Rippon, then minister of technology.

LondonߞExports of the Anglo-French Jaguar strike fighter and trainer could start by 1972, with the prototype flight program now well advanced and engine teething troubles confined to one major area: variable afterburning. The airplane is going into its production phase and first elements are being shipped to Breguet Aviation’s new Jaguar production facility at Toulouse from British Aircraft Corp.’s Preston Div.
