Senate Report Blasts Procurement of F-111

Washington-Procurement of the Convair F-111 aircraft was “a fiscal blunder of the greatest magnitude” which wasted more than $500 million, impacted adversely on U.S. defense posture and lowered public confidence in the defense establishment, the Senate Government Operations Permanent Investigations Subcommittee declared in a report prepared for release last week.

Erts Could Aid Crop Blight Fight

Houston-Operational earth resources satellite could be used as an important weapon in the struggle against various forms of agricultural blight, such as the one that swept through this nation’s corn crops earlier this year. Speaking at the third annual earth resources program review held at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Manned Spacecraft Center here, Dr. A. B. Park of NASA headquarters said a satellite scanning the same area of the U.S. every 18 days could have detected the spread of the blight much sooner than conventional methods now in use.

Braniff Readies 747 Hawaiian Service

Dallas-Braniff International’s marketing strategy for its operation of the Boeing 747 on daily service from here to Hawaii will involve three basic tactics. They are: Modifying the airline’s domestic schedules so that these services will serve as feeder lines to provide optimum connections from prime market areas to Dallas where passengers will board the nonstop flight to Honolulu.

General Electric’s recently disclosed techniques for automated handling of semiconductor microcircuit chips—electrically connecting and packaging them into finished devices—show promise of eliminating the largest cost factor in the production of microcircuitry (AW&ST Dec. 14, p. 25).

The concept of a strong and expanding air transport system is so attractive to so many that it is taken too much for granted. I believe this is what is happening today, to the point of overlooking danger signals in air transportation. The first of these danger signals have begun to appear.
