Houston—Navy Capt. Alan B. Shepard Jr., at 47 the ancient mariner of space flight, cooly flung off the albatross of human frailty, as he became the fifth man ever to set foot on another world. He was almost an hour late in keeping his date with the moon, but it did not matter much; he had worked for years against the benumbing odds of a faulty inner ear and approaching middle age to get there at all.
