Raking of the ashes of the U. S. supersonic transport program is uncovering new sources of controversy as efforts to keep the last coals of hope alive appeared to be losing strength. Initial wildfire of rumors about the availability of large sums of money was burning out last week, with a crystallizing attitude at Boeing, General Electric and on Capitol Hill that the U. S. supersonic transport prototype program was beyond revival.

Tu-144 Expected to Be Displayed at Paris

Paris-Soviet Union is expected to confirm next week that the Tupolev Tu-144 will be the featured exhibit of a strong commercial transport display it plans for the 1971 Paris air show at Le Bourget Airport May 27-June 6. Air show officials say they are “99% sure” the 100-130 passenger Tu-144 will be put on static display and flown during the show.

The U.S. supersonic transport program appears to be dead, but a waterfall of crocodile tears is gushing from the politicians who killed it. Now that they have turned a billion-dollar government development loan into a useless debt for the taxpayers, the victors of the SST battle are no longer talking about the money they saved or the noble purposes toward which they planned to divert it.
