Navy Stresses V/STOL Development, Readies F-14 Fighter

Washington—Navy expects to introduce the Grumman F-14 variable-geometry fighter, with its Hughes Phoenix missile system and AWG-9 weapons control system, into the fleet within the next 18 months. At the same time, the service will continue major efforts to develop two types of vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for use during the next decade on board sea control ships.

USAF Readies Tactical Force Decisions

Washington—Air Force is expected to make procurement decisions within the next two years that will provide a manned tactical aircraft force structure for the coming decade. Likely in the years ahead will be a force mixture of McDonnell Douglas F-15 air-superiority fighters, Fairchild Industries A-10A close-support aircraft and lightweight fighters.
